Week 6
I have changed my timeline a bit since I proposed my project. Instead of focusing entirely on the visual system this week, I have been focusing on the system the audience interfaces with. I believe it is more important to develop a rough version of this first… after all, I need to start at the bottom before I go heavy on the details.
I, unfortunately, had to get my hands dirty with Python; I am not a lover of the language by any means. I’m using it to communicate with Mediapipe and OSC (Open Sound Control), to track my hand and send these values to Ableton/Max. Using these values, I can control the visual and audio systems.
Hand values:
Distance 1: Between thumb and index finger
Distance 2: Between thumb and pinky (amount that the hand is spread/opened in total)
Angle 1: Angle of thumb and index finger rotated
Angle 2: Angle between thumb and pinky rotated
I have created something quite expressive with this that the audience will interact with— a drone machine! How exciting… It creates beautiful results that aren’t too jarring, so I will be able to improvise to it in real time.
I plan to have a camera or two in the audience, with vague instructions, so a volunteer can step up and collaborate with me. Members will be able to step up and perform with me, to have a musical conversation. One will control visuals, and the other will control audio.
