Week 1/2

I am super interested in video art and modern techno. Live performance is super captivating for me, and I like that with both mediums, improvisation is possible.

I started off DJing, but after a year or two, it felt like it wasn’t enough. I became distraught at the idea that the producers who fuel the scene often don’t get any recognition or payment —it is only the DJ who reaps the benefits.  I also have a bit of an individuality complex. Nowadays, it sort of feels like anyone and everyone in New York is becoming a DJ, not necessarily a good one, but a DJ nonetheless. That has put a stain on the medium for me. While there is potential to create something new from multiple tracks and to feed off the crowd and throw energy back at them, it seems most are acting like a human Spotify playlist.

For this reason, I have drifted towards live sets instead. I can sculpt a voice that is truly unique to myself, and once I discovered video art, it was game over! Audiovisual performances are a way to combine the two things that are close to my heart. I love that there is real-time media/sound processing. I like seeing the results firsthand. This way, not only am I immersed in the process, but the audience is as well. Both of us are drawn in.

So what if I had the audience interact with the performance as well? I’m thinking I’d have the audience participate as well? Mediapipe...visuals...performance art....!?
