Week 12

After Professor Fahner’s comments from the critique last week, I’ve completely rethought my interaction system. I had no idea about the legacy of the media arts pose, and after doing my research, I cannot have that occur within my thesis project. This undermines the project's conceptual framework when the interaction doesn’t feel very serious.

Yes, MediaPipe is great for getting started and working with, but it is exactly for that: to prototype. So, I did some brainstorming. The goal is for the performer's collaboration to feel effortless; one does not need background knowledge of electronic music; they just need to give their full attention and enjoy. After all, this project is directly about the connection between performer and audience.

I find that when I go out, I enter a flow state while dancing to the music. Time flies by, nothing else exists except me, the music, and the DJ. That’s why I simplified this action further and am using another library, OpenCV, to track a dancer's energy based on their movement. That way, the collaborator doesn’t have to think at all; they can just enjoy. And if I scale this up, it will make the entire dance floor extremely interactive, while still keeping the intimate environment that I am hoping to create.

On Friday, I have the audio lab booked for four hours, so I’ll be able to prototype the system in its entirety and get some documentation. Hopefully, I’ll have the first run through recorded by next week.
