Week 3

This week, I started by gathering references:

  1. Steina Vasulka - Violin Power (1978)
    1. Similar to what I want to do, Steina created her own system to use for audiovisual performance. She is utilizing MIDI to control her video art arsenal. Unlike her in this video, I want to perform live, although I know she has performed in the live setting many times. This feels incredibly relevant to me because she created a tool she can use again and again. It isn’t a one-trick pony. I want to do the same.
  2. The Art Of Production: Rrose - Techno Psychoacoustics
    1. Rrose is another artist that I look up to. Just like them, I want to use psychoacoustic techniques to play with how the audiences perceive my sound. I like using natural laws and phenomena in my production so it sounds organic, because it literally is! Here they are showing just how powerful a simple sine wave can be as well as filter feeding back into itself. They are always pushing the boundaries of sound design to create something never heard before. I want to have a unique sonic identity like them.
  3. Peryl live at SUPERBOOTH25
    1. I’ve been very interested in rule-based art, and for this performance, he set a rule to only use a single cycle sine wave. I am a strong believer that limitation results in creativity, and this is exactly that. This is also not as clubby as his usual performances and is more like what I’m picturing.
